Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”) and ruumzNation Sdn Bhd (“ruumz’) today announced their extended support for the P1 Malaysian Filmmaker Showcase – 15Malaysia (15MY) project and the talented local filmmakers by sponsoring the directors travels to the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in Korea, where the 15-film showcase was recently accepted to screen.
The PIFF in Korea is one of Asia’s largest and most established annual industry event. It hosts numerous sideline events dedicated to promoting Asian cinema including the Asian Cinema Fund, the Asian Network of Documentary Fund, the Asian Film Academy and the Pusan Promotion Plan.
Whilst 15MY made its way to screen at PIFF, the festival organisers sponsored only three or four of the more established directors to the event. Michael Lai, CEO of P1 believes that none of the creators of 15MY should be left behind.
He said, “We’re extremely proud that 15MY is gaining international grounds. All 15 of the very talented local directors who created the showcase, should be there at Pusan. Our sponsorship of the directors to this important and highly regarded “serious filmmaker” event, hopes to provide them with the exposure and opportunities to move on to more and bigger scale projects. And I hope we all realise now that they’ve all got what it takes.”
To bring to life this exciting occasion for Malaysians, ruumz, which is the official online partner for 15MY will be featuring exclusive travelogue content (videos and blog) direct from Pusan over the course of the festival from X to Y October. For more updates on the build-up to P1 and 15MY at Pusan, please go to www.ruumz.com/15malaysia .

“ruumz is a social media platform which showcases and enables Malaysian content developers to reach, interact and engage with audiences directly, in ways that wasn’t possible before the availability of high-quality & consistent broadband connections. 15MY is our showcase project on what the Malaysian creative community and ruumz can do, and the response has been absolutely amazing,” said James Chong, the Chief Executive of ruumz.
He added, “ruumz will enable the huge fanbase of 15MY to further engage with the directors on a much more personal level by providing exclusive and up-to-the minute 15MY at Pusan content. The directors’ interesting personalities and their interaction with this prestigious and colourful international film festival and its participants, for many of them a first – will make great online content.”
P1 launched 15MY in August as part of its branding effort and to support local content creation. 15MY is produced by Pete Teo, who also produced the successful independent online viral campaign, Malaysian Artists For Unity (“MAFU”). To date, 15MY has generated significant online buzz with close to 3 million ruumz and YouTube video streams and 11 million visits to the site. At its peak, its YouTube channel was also the 10th most watched channel in the world. The analytics is clear that 15MY has set the precedence for successful online viral campaigns for Malaysia.
Teo said, “15Malaysia encourages the broadening of minds, as well as move us towards more open public discourse of important issues that are close to the hearts of many Malaysians. The project was not something that many corporations would happily participate due to its social political themes, but P1 and ruumz were all for it because the project was unconventional and online, and because it creates relevant content and celebrates homegrown creativity. All the directors are really excited about going to Pusan.”

15MY has also received numerous invitations to other international film festivals including the much coveted Golden Horse Film Festival, Taipei. The Golden Horse is one of the most prestigious award showcases worldwide and the most well-regarded in the Chinese-language film industry.

Penang-born, Fatimah Abu Bakar is the judge of popular show Akademi
“I started acting with a group of people who headed the theatre company called Kelab Teater Kuala Lumpur,” she recalls. From there she went on to film and television before joining New Straits Times, where she worked for 26 years.
But it was AF which made Fatimah a household name amongst Malaysians. She is one of the more popular personalities in the reality show, where her role is that of teacher, counsellor and motivator. Needless to say, this endearing woman is much loved by the aspiring singers who are drawn to her warm ways.
“I still remember when the folks from Astro (the producer of the reality show) were looking for people for AF. The producer knew me as a performer who had acted in theatre and television,” she explains.
“At the time a lot of people were very curious about the programme and what it was going to be like and whether audiences would react positively to it,” she continueds.
Then, she got a call from the producer on what the show was going to be all about and she was shown a demo. That is how she joined the show, and got permission from her bosses at that time, to take time off from work for around three to four months to work on the show.
“My role is basically – and this is what everyone says! – that of a motherly figure who coaches the students in drama and this has evolved to counselling them as well as being their English teacher of sorts,” Fatimah says.
Of AF’s popularity with the Malaysian audience, Fatimah puts it down to the fact that people generally get excited when seeing others compete in a competition, especially when the audience itself gets to pick who ends up becoming a star. So, the public itself is playing a big role in the show.
Asked how she evaluates talents for AF during the auditioning stage, Fatimah says that she looks for characteristics like personality, general knowledge and, to a certain extent, the confidence projected through their body language. Additional qualities like being able to think quickly on their feet are the extra something that work very well on television.
I asked her, “What does it take to be a “star” singer today?”
“You MUST have education -- at least the SPM level. You must also read a lot, listen to all kinds of music and constantly be interested in gaining knowledge and learning and from there you can be more confident. You must also have plenty of energy and the energy must have “sparks”. Be hungry to learn new things all the time. Oh, and don’t be afraid of hard work!” she says.
She clearly puts great importance on education.
Fatimah herself did her degree in mass communication majoring in journalism at ITM (now UiTM)
This explains her tenure at News Straits Times. Starting out as a reporter at the Malay Mail, she then became a sub-editor at the same paper before becoming sub-editor with the News Straits Times. She went on to become the entertainment editor and then women’s desk editor and features editor with Life&Times, before finally becoming an associate editor. After she left NST, she set up her own company, Salt Media Consultancy with some friends.
It’s a passion her children inherited. Famously, her daughter Sharifah Amani is quite a big name in the film industry at the moment.
Josh Hartnett overshadowed by Japanese actor Kimura
Posted by Khairul Izuan | 3:17 PM | 0 comments »BUSAN, South Korea : Josh Hartnett isn't having things all his own way at Asia's largest film festival. Every time the Hollywood star appears in public, the loudest screams are being directed at his co-star.
Hartnett is here at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival to promote his latest film, the thriller "I Come with the Rain", alongside fellow cast members Lee Byung-hun, of South Korea, and Japan's Takuya Kimura.
And Saturday during an appearance before 5,000 fans who had camped out all day at the city's famous Haeundae beach the fans cheered when Hartnett appeared. But they went ballistic as soon as they saw Kimura.
It was the same at a press conference for the film Friday and on the red carpet during Thursday night's opening ceremony.
"It's okay," said Hartnett. "He's a good-looking guy. And I know the ladies love him."
Kimura, a member of boyband SMAP, has become an idol throughout Asia thanks to his roles in Japanese television series including the wildly successful "Hero" where he played a cop who bends the rules.
In recent years he has worked alongside art-house movie directors Wong Kar-wai, for "2046", and Yoji Yamada on "Love and Honor".
For his part, Kimura said acting alongside Hartnett had been an "honour" and that he had been surprised to find the American just a "very good guy."
Haeundae is often described as the world's most crowded beach during the summer months, when it attracts up to 100,000 people along its narrow 1.5 kilometre (one mile) stretch.
And it looked a little like that Saturday, with thousands crowding the sand and sitting in the autumn sunshine waiting for a chance to see the stars -- and even have their questions answered during an "open talk" session.
Hartnett was again gracious when his first questioner ask how he rated local actors compared to those he worked with in Hollywood.
"It's always a pleasure to work with great actors and it is very difficult to compare Hollywood actors with Asian actors," he said.
"All I can say is that they are extremely dedicated to their craft."
"I Come with the Rain" is an atmospheric thriller from the celebrated Paris-raised Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung, who won the Camera d'Or at the 1993 Cannes festival for "The Scent of Green Papaya" and the Golden Lion in Venice for "Cyclo" in 1995.
Hartnett said shooting the film had been a unique experience as it had taken him to the Philippines and Hong Kong, and had mixed the styles of all the international filmmakers involved.
"The reception from the fans has been great and it is nice to see so many people support a poetic film like this," he said. "These types of films don't get released in Hollywood too often these days and that's a shame."
For his part, director Tran had earlier said shooting the film was a "nightmare" due to the locations he had chosen but he was proud of the end product and in particular of his three leading men.
"When I am casting a role the most important thing is the humanity that comes with the actor and I think you can see that with these three guys," he said.

Celebrities to judge videos backing US health care reforms
Posted by Khairul Izuan | 3:15 PM | 0 comments »Poring over the 30-second video entries with will.i.am when the competition ends on October 18 will be actress Kate Walsh, medical practitioner in TV series Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice; Seth MacFarlane, the creator of hit animated series Family Guy, and half a dozen other entertainment names.
From the world of politics, the judging panel will draw on the eye of Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, who is also head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC); DNC Executive Director Jen O'Malley Dillon and David Plouffe, Obama's election campaign manager, among others.
"Your video can be serious or funny, simple or sophisticated. Just make sure to focus on why we need to fix today's broken system, or how President Obama's plan will help make sure all Americans have the care they need," said an email sent out by Plouffe announcing the judging panel for the competition.
Video entries can be no more than 30 seconds long and must be submitted by US citizens.
The prize for the winner will have the honour of having their video "used in a television advertisement associated with Sponsor's health reform campaign."
The value of the prize is listed as "zero dollars".
Last year, will.i.am turned the words of a speech by Obama into a song, added a music video that was liberally laced with celebrities and posted the lot on the Internet, where it went viral.
He said he made the song, entitled "Yes We Can," after hearing Obama's speech at the primary in New Hampshire, where he lost to Hillary Clinton, in which he repeatedly intoned those three words, which went on to become one of the catch-phrases of his candidacy
